Premium credit cards in India can carry annual fees ranging from ₹2,999 to over ₹12,500. Are they worth it? The answer lies strictly in the math.
The "Net Value" Calculation
You should only hold a premium card if its Net Annual Value is significantly positive.
Net Value = (Expected Rewards + Monetary Benefits) - (Annual Fee + 18% GST)
Factors to Consider
- Welcome Benefits: Many premium cards offset the first year's fee with equivalent reward points or vouchers. However, this only applies to year one.
- Fee Waivers: Can you realistically hit the annual spend threshold to waive the fee next year? If the waiver requires ₹10 Lakhs in spending and you only spend ₹4 Lakhs, you must factor the fee into your long-term calculations.
- Lifestyle Benefits: Does the card offer unlimited lounge access, golf rounds, or free movie tickets? These only have value if you actually use them. If you never golf, a free golf round is worth ₹0 to you.
The Verdict
If your spending is high enough that the accelerated rewards heavily outweigh the GST-inclusive fee, a premium card is highly profitable. If not, stick to a solid lifetime-free or low-fee cashback card.
